Though many homes and apartments now have central AC units, there are still quite a few places in the US that don’t. You will commonly find those places more in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the country. The video above explains how to properly install a window AC unit.
It was my 30th birthday and, for it, my friends had planned an elaborate night on the town complete with the best limo service st. louis. I would have been fine with just a nice dinner and a trip to one of the city’s jazz lounges. However, they wanted to make my night “epic” and, for better or worse, they achieved their goal. It started out with a little pre-gaming. In our case, that did not involve watching a football or basketball game before we left the house. Our pre-game involved a champagne toast to an amazing night. I should have known from the way the toast went that we were in for a rough night. My friend Janet actually spilled her drink on another friend because she was trying to avoid stepping on my dog. In the grand scheme of how things went that night, however, that was perhaps the smallest of mishaps.
Once the limo came to get us, we were super excited to head to dinner. Dinner actually went off without a hitch. We went to a “basic” place, The Melting Pot, but hey…I had never had it and it was my birthday so that is what I wanted. As a side note, I am not sure how anyone could eat there regularly. Do not get me wrong. The food and service were amazing. I enjoyed the cheese fondue selection and especially loved the chocolate fondue fountain. The bill though? I did not love that. Fortunately, I did not have to pay for it, but since I do not spend a lot of money on myself I felt a bit bad for asking someone else to spend it on me. Of course, my friends were happy to and, again, that part of the night was great and fun.
This is the part of the night that went awry. First, it was pretty warm in the limo because the driver did not keep the vehicle running while we were at dinner..no Air Condition! Okay, cool (or not, but I digress…) It cooled down pretty quickly once we got settled. Then, on the way to the lounge we hit a pothole. No disrespect to the driver from http://www.limostlouis.org/ because he was excellent and did a good job maneuvering through the potholes that cover the great streets of St. Louis. I have had a blowout after hitting a pothole so I could totally sympathize. What happened next was epic alright. We were broken down and he was calling to arrange a new limo to get us and, I assume, tow truck to get the other limo. Another side note…I have never seen a limo being towed and I was somewhat looking forward to seeing how that would go. I never got the chance to though because the tour bus-like thing pulled up next to us.
We were a bit confused and wondered if it was just a good samaritan stopping to help us. But, no. that was our ride. I started to get a bit annoyed because it was a huge bus and I was not sure how we would be able to get to the lounge since it was located on a narrow street. Nevertheless, we all climbed in and in that moment we realized that it was a tour bus. In fact, there were several people on it already. None of them looked familiar until this one guy came from the back. And it was…none other than…Justin Beiber. Oh, how I would have been super excited if I were turning 20 instead of 30. Ha! But, I had a few friends who love his music who were extremely excited to see him.
I guess the limo company had a limo on route to get us but Beiber thought it would be great to pick us up. The whole thing ended up being filmed and we had to sign releases and the whole nine. I can’t say that I was upset about the evening. It definitely was a wild ride. By the time we got through the entire release signing and my friends asked him enough questions and took enough pictures to feel satisfied, we headed to the lounge to be dropped off. And guess what? It was closed! So, I did not get to do everything I wanted for my birthday, but I did meet Justin Beiber and I guess that counts for something.
There have been plenty of updates to the air conditioning field in recent years including better quality air conditioning units, energy efficiency upgrades and more. Because of the updates, if your AC unit starts showing signs of wear and tear — or if it’s just not cooling like it used to — it may make more sense to replace it instead of repairing it.
An example of a recent update includes a new rule for AC manufacturers. Almost six years ago, industry rules changed to require manufacturers to use a new type of refrigerant; one that is not an ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon. As a result of that change, newer AC systems are more energy efficient, often using less than half the electricity of an old one while doing a much better job of keeping your home cool and cozy.
So how do you know if it makes sense to replace or repair your air conditioner? We asked a few local ac repair boca raton contractors. They said a good rule of thumb is if your air conditioner is more than a seven or eight years old, it is probably best to replace it. For simple fixes like a clogged condenser unit or a broken fan belt, a simple repair will do. Also, it is a great idea to ask your local contractor to determine the condition of your unit before making the final call to replace or repair it. A professional can review not just the condition of your AC unit, but they can inspect the air ducts and determine how your home’s insulation is affecting the efficiency of your system. Assessing all those components may help to increase the effectiveness of the system as much or more than installing a new AC unit.
Is it worth it to repair?
In the air conditioner world, new updates means better equipment and better equipment means more efficiency. So, if your central air conditioner around a decade old, it may be better to replace it than repair it. That is because an older system could use almost twice the electricity that even a low-grade new one would use. Older AC units operate at or below 10 SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is the amount of energy needed to provide a targeted cooling output. Until ten years ago, 10 SEER was standard. However, new updates have improved the standard to a minimum of 13 SEER. That may not seem like a huge improvement but it translates to 30% less electrical consumption and 30% lower cooling bills.
Depending on the size of your home, a new 13 SEER unit may cost roughly $3,000 to $4,000. If you purchased an even more energy efficient 16 SEER AC unit, you could easily see a 60% reduction in cooling costs when compared to a 10 SEER unit purchased over ten years ago.
Other factors to consider
The best quality AC unit is only as good as its attached system. Ducts and insulation are a major part of a functioning air conditioning unit. On average, a home’s ductwork leaks 10% to 30% of its air before it reaches any rooms in your home. Sealing the vents and measuring how much air escapes the system is one way to improve your AC’s efficiency without making costly repairs. Our Boca Raton air condition repair experts estimate the cost to run ductwork tests at $25 to $35 per vent.
There are many factors to consider when making the decision to repair or replace your home’s air conditioning unit. Is your home well insulated? It’s not just the ductwork that may cause flow problems. Leaky windows and drafty doors can be a drain on your AC system. Having an overall energy efficiency check goes a long way to ensuring all your home’s systems work together to heat and/or cool your space effectively. Scheduling an energy efficiency audit is easy. You can call your local electric and gas company to inquire about having a representative conduct a free or low cost energy efficiency check on your home. Once that is completed, if you are still having issues with your central air conditioner, then it’s time to contact the pros.
